peony (flower)

牡丹

Long used as an ornamental and medicinal plant, the peony has large, showy flowers, often scented. The plant itself comes in herbaceous, treelike, and hybrid forms. It is named after Paeon, a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing.
