Second JRPG developed by Square Co., Ltd. (later Square Enix) for the Final Fantasy series. It was first released on the Famicom (NES) system on 17 December 1988. It was later ported on the WonderSwan Color (2001), PlayStation (2002) [its first-ever English release], Game Boy Advance (2004), mobile phones (2005), PlayStation Portable (2007), and Apple products (2010).
The game follows the exploits of the Wild Rose Rebellion, specifically those of the orphan Firion and his friends, as they free the world from the clutches of the Palamecian Empire and its tyrannical leader, Emperor Mateus Palamecia.
Not to be confused with FFIV, which was initially released in the USA as the "second" game in the series.
