An extreme subgenre of heavy metal. Its musical characteristics are shrieked vocal style, heavy use of distorted guitar riffs with tremolo picking in order to emphasize atmosphere, and lo-fi recording. Lyrical themes typically revolve around hatred, Satanism, heresy, blasphemy, darkness, Paganism, depression, suicide or such.

Darkthrone and Mayhem are notable black metal bands.
